Website or Mobile App: Which Does Your Business Need First?

By eLeopards Team · 10 Sept 2026 · 5 min read

Founders often ask for an app when what they need is a good website. An app can be the right call, but it is a bigger commitment. Here is how to decide.

Start with a website if...

  • People find you through search or social media.
  • You need to explain services, show work and collect enquiries.
  • You want the widest reach with the lowest friction. Nobody has to install anything.

Build an app if...

  • Customers use your product repeatedly, such as ordering, booking or tracking.
  • You need phone features: push notifications, camera, offline access or location.
  • You have an audience that will actually install it.

The middle path

A fast, mobile-friendly website can often cover the first version of an idea. A progressive web app adds some app-like behaviour without store submission. You can then build a full app once you have proof that customers want it.

Cost and maintenance

Apps need updates when iOS and Android change, plus store review and ongoing support. Budget for maintenance, not only the build.

How to decide

Write down the single most important thing a customer does with you. If a web page can do it well, build the site first. If it depends on notifications, repeat use or device features, an app is worth scoping.
