Video Editing: How to Hook Viewers in the First Three Seconds
By eLeopards Team · 10 Oct 2026 · 4 min read
On social platforms, viewers decide almost immediately whether to keep watching. The opening seconds of your edit do most of the work.
Open with the payoff
Start with the most interesting moment, a clear promise or a question the video will answer. Save the introduction for later or skip it.
Techniques that work
- Cut tight: remove pauses, filler words and slow starts.
- Use on-screen text so the video makes sense with the sound off.
- Add captions. Many people watch muted.
- Change the shot or angle every few seconds to keep visual energy.
- Use sound design and music to support emotion, not to cover weak content.
Edit for the platform
Export vertical for short-form platforms, keep important content away from the edges where interface elements sit, and make separate cuts for different channels rather than reusing one file everywhere.
Check retention
Look at where viewers drop off in each platform's analytics and test a different opening on your next video.
