Answer-First Writing: How to Structure Pages for Answer Engines

Quick answer
Answer engines favour pages that respond to a question quickly and clearly. Here is how to write and structure content for them.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is about making it easy for a search feature or an AI assistant to pull a clear answer from your page. The skill is old-fashioned good writing: say the answer first, then explain.
Lead with the answer
Under each question-style heading, give the direct answer in one or two sentences. Then add detail, examples and caveats. Readers get what they came for immediately, and a machine has a clean passage to quote.
Use headings that sound like real questions
- 'How long does a website take to build?' beats 'Timelines'.
- Group related questions on one page instead of scattering them.
- Keep each heading focused on a single question.
Add FAQs that earn their place
Use the real questions customers ask by phone, email and chat. Write honest, specific answers, including limits and costs where you can. Mark them up with FAQ schema only when the questions and answers are visible on the page.
Make passages self-contained
Assume a passage may be quoted without the rest of the page. Name the subject rather than saying 'it' or 'this', and include the key fact in the passage itself. Short paragraphs of three to four sentences are easiest to lift.
Do not sacrifice readers
Write for people first. Pages built only for machines tend to read badly and perform worse. If a human finds your page clear and useful, you are doing most of what answer engines look for.
Common questions
- What does answer-first writing mean?
- Giving the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under a heading, then adding detail, examples and caveats.
- Should I add FAQ schema to every page?
- Only when the questions and answers are visible on the page and are genuinely useful to readers.
